NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY

SMC were heavily involved in the interior design of the public areas, as well as the complete artwork procurement programme for this 4000 passenger newbuild, launched from Meyer Werft in Spring 2013. Norwegian Breakaway, featuring 15 bars and restaurants as well as an onboard night club, ice bar, fitness centre, an expansive casino and not forgetting the kids Splash academy. SMC have enjoyed a long and productive relationship with Norwegian Cruise Line, and enjoyed collaborating closely with them to produce this exciting and ambitious ship.

SMC looked to weave elements of this brief into the overall design aesthetic. For example, the open deck murals featured iconic New York landmarks, and the Norwegian Cruise line staple O’Sheehans neighborhood bar featured imagery of Irish heritage.

The art collection commissioned and sourced by SMC included over 8500 bespoke pieces from established, as well as up and coming artists. SMC Art Consultancy handled the entire process of this artwork procurement – from concept, to budget handling through to logistics and onsite installation. SMC viewed artwork as an integral part of the overall design, commissioning pieces such as a huge illuminated lightbox acting as a backdrop to the Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, integrated log walls in the Italian restaurant and large scale vinyl graphics designed in collaboration with Nickelodeon for the Splash Academy Kids Area.
