(English) Believed to be one of the largest cruise ship refits ever and the first ever ship designed uniquely for the Saudi Arabian market. SMC Design were appointed as lead architect for the design of 80% of the ship and FF&E, wayfinding, branding and art-sourcing for the entire ship.

AROYA is a 335-metre vessel transformed in just 22 months – a remarkable feat in scale and pace. Beyond interiors, SMC defined every layer of the brand, from identity and artwork to signage and cultural curation. Working closely with the Saudi Ministry of Culture, we drew on heritage, craft and landscape to shape a design language that is both authentic and globally relevant.

Irth

Irth, the flagship Saudi restaurant on AROYA, offers an immersive dining experience rooted in heritage and produce from all five regions of the Kingdom. Designed by SMC in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture, the interiors celebrate traditional craft and storytelling through rich materials, regional tapestries and a contemporary take on woven ceilings. Olive trees, warm earthy tones and a showcase of Saudi ingredients create an atmosphere that is both authentic and refined, making Irth a true cultural landmark at sea.

(English) La Tavola brings the warmth of an Italian trattoria to sea, with interiors that balance elegance and ease. Natural tones, soft lighting and botanical details – including an on-board hydroponic herb wall – create a fresh, authentic atmosphere. Framed by views into the open kitchen, the space celebrates artisanal craft, seasonal flavour and the convivial spirit of dining together.

Previously a VIP junket casino, the area was transformed into Aroya Cruises’ Meast – a Turkish steakhouse signature dining venue that stands out as one of SMC Design’s most remarkable transformations.

The refit of this Category A space involved stripping the casino down to its bare steel framework and constructing an entirely new galley from scratch.

(English) Space Diner

(English) Among the most original concepts created for AROYA, Space Diner reimagines the 1950s American diner through the lens of futuristic space travel. Located on Deck 7 with seating for 126, it combines chrome, neon and galaxy-inspired lighting with theatrical dining and entertainment. Two full-scale replica Apollo 11 capsules, developed with Timothy Oulton, serve as private dining pods, making the venue a playful, immersive experience unlike anything else at sea.

(English) Marka Café

(English) Celebrating the essence of Saudi hospitality, Marka Café on Deck 8 reimagines the majlis as a contemporary social hub at sea. Traditional motifs and craft are woven into the design – from patterned screens and warm woods to soft, ambient light – creating a space that feels unmistakably Saudi yet globally inviting. Guests enjoy coffee, tea, sweets and cakes in a relaxed setting, while a chocolate and coffee bar with live demonstrations adds theatre and a modern sense of occasion.

(English) KIDS AREA

(English) SMC transformed a former spa into Sailor Shore, one of the largest kids’ areas at sea, spanning 1,858m² across multiple zones. Created with TigerPlay, the ocean-themed environment offers age-appropriate play from soft play for infants to climbing walls, gaming lounges and interactive workshops for older children. Highlights include a bridge simulator, a flexible theatre space and creative activities, all brought to life with immersive lighting, bold colours and dynamic sea-life motifs. The result is a vibrant, versatile space where design, brand and family experience seamlessly unite.
