Today was a momentous occasion for Saga Cruises who proudly christened and named Spirit of Discovery in the Port of Dover.

Under clear blue skies, the godmother of the ship, HRH Duchess of Cornwall had the honour of christening the 999 passenger new build cruise ship. Designed by SMC Design and built by Meyer Werft, Saga Cruises will now be preparing their new ship for its first passenger cruise.

SMC Design would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved in what has been a four year cycle for many of us – from the early contract work with Saga Cruises and Foreships through to Meyer Werft shipyard and all their contractors who made our dreams reality in the delivery of the ship.

    Congratulations to all!

Attending the awards on behalf of SMC Design was Senior Designer/Project Manager over it’s four year design period, Ben Wilson, who in reflection stated that, “this is a fantastic award to receive in recognition of the great work the design team at SMC produced, from the conceptual phases right up to the delivery of the ship”.

SMC Design were responsible for a wide variety of disciplines on this project, from the interior concepts of all public and crew areas, all cabins and suites, the signage and way-finding solutions onboard, the exterior styling of the vessel, and finally the Artwork procurement and commissioning by SMC Art Consultancy on behalf of SAGA Cruises.

SMC would like to thank SAGA Cruises and Meyer Werft shipyard for the fantastic collaboration experienced throughout this project, and wish all the best for Spirit of Discovery and it’s crew on the waves!

A cruise ship’s profile takes precedent at the early stages of the design process. The brief for Spirit of Discovery was to create a classic cruise liner look whilst offering ample exterior space to both guests and crew.

Taking us through the design journey on this blog are Senior Designers/Project Managers, Ben Wilson and Liz Richardson.
