ASUKA III Arrives in Her Homeport – A New Chapter for NYK Cruises

SMC Design is proud to celebrate the arrival of ASUKA III in her home port – a significant milestone in the journey of NYK Cruises’ new flagship and a defining moment for the future of Japanese cruising.

Set to début in summer 2025, ASUKA III marks the next generation of cruise experience for NYK Cruises. The 52,265 GT vessel with 381 guest rooms has been designed to reflect a refined evolution of the ASUKA brand, combining traditional Japanese elegance with a contemporary global sensibility.

SMC Design was appointed to create a complete design vision for the ship, encompassing all guest-facing interior and exterior areas, as well as signage and wayfinding. This fully integrated approach has allowed for a consistent and immersive guest experience – one that feels both authentically Japanese and confidently international.

ASUKA III has been designed to appeal to a broad audience: loyal ASUKA guests and first-time cruisers alike. From serene lounges and elegant dining spaces to refined staterooms and open decks, the ship offers a fresh and inviting atmosphere grounded in quality and craftsmanship.

Reflecting on the project, Oliver Raine, Senior Designer and Project Manager at SMC Design, commented:
The way we’ve worked with the Japanese team throughout this process has been incredibly rewarding. It never felt like a client-designer relationship – more like a single, unified team. Their positivity, creativity and openness made tackling the scale and complexity of ASUKA III a collaborative and inspiring experience. Seeing her reach her homeport in Yokohama is a proud moment for all of us. This partnership has been essential in turning our shared vision into reality.
We are honoured to have played a part in shaping ASUKA III and look forward to her inaugural season, which will include cruises along the coasts of Japan and an annual world voyage.
