Here they shared insights into Saga Cruises’ new ship, Spirit of Adventure and how they developed a unique collection of artworks that celebrates the British Isles, the landscape, heritage, flora and fauna.

SMC Design is among the impressive global design talent to have become a finalist for the second year in a row in the SBID International Design Awards 2020, for its entry into the Restaurant Design category with ‘L’Atelier Bistrot’ onboard MSC Grandiosa.
Taking place virtually this year, the SBID International Design Awards 2020 shall be taking place on Friday October 23rd – good luck to all taking part!
Amazing news – SMC Design has won two awards at the inaugural Cruise Ship Interiors Awards, picking up both ‘Best Outdoor Space’ and ‘Best Signage’ for our work on the Spirit of Discovery for Saga Cruises!

MSC Cruises have successfully launched Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, a new spectacular private island approximately 80km north-west of The Bahamas.
On the island itself, SMC Design were responsible for the interior design, branding and artwork of the Yacht Club, Seakers Food Court and The Lighthouse to name a few areas!
SMC Design would like to congratulate MSC Cruises and the team on site for the delivery of this wonderful island!

SMC Design will be in attendance at the first Cruise Ship Interiors Expo Europe event being held at the Fira de Barcelona on the 4th-5th Dec 2019. As well as hosting stand #238, Managing Director Andy Yuill will be taking part in two sessions as part of the Conference Programme.
The first taking place on Thursday 5th December at 12.20pm is entitled ‘Streamlining the Refit Process’ – a cross-disciplinary panel debating the challenges faced within the refit process from start to finish.
The second session a few hours later at 3.25pm is called ‘Future Global Outlook’ – where cruise design experts will come together to share their visions for the cruise ship interiors of tomorrow.
Along with Andy Yuill, Andrew Brown (Director), Jennie Drummond (Head of Art/SMC Art Consultancy) and Tolu Adeko (Senior Designer/Project Manager – FF&E) shall be present in Barcelona to meet with industry friends – old and new!
Delivered in October 2019 by Chantiers De l’Atlantique, MSC Grandiosa is the sister ship to MSC Bellissima.
Included within the French cuisine restaurant L’Atelier Bistrot will be a purpose built art installation – the ‘Degas, Danse Dessin’ exhibition – presenting 26 studies of movement and dance. Onboard MSC Grandiosa will also be the new MSC Foundation.
SMC would like to congratulate MSC Cruises on the delivery of the ship and look forward to further collaborations on the sister ship MSC Virtuosa!
We are proud to announce that SMC Design have been nominated within the ‘Transport’ category for both Spirit of Discovery for Saga Cruises and Viking Orion for Viking Cruises, of which SMC Design acted as Lead Architects on both vessels delivered in 2019.
Hosted at Battersea Evolution in London, the AHEAD Awards Europe 2019 shall be taking place on Monday 18th November prior to the Sleep & Eat events also taking place that week.

SMC is proud to announce that its most recently completed project, Spirit of Discovery for Saga Cruises, has been featured on the front cover of the latest issue of International Cruise and Ferry Review!
Christened in July 2019, SMC Design was responsible for the Interiors, Artwork and Branding elements of all public areas, crew areas and cabins and suites onboard Spirit of Discovery.
SMC Design has been nominated within the ‘Bespoke Cabinetry/Installation category for ‘This Scepter’d Isle’. Designed in-house by Design Associate Alun Roberts, SMC Art successfully created and commissioned this wonderful installation which can now be found aboard Spirit of Discovery by Saga Cruises.
In it’s tenth year, The International Design & Architecture Awards, ran by Design Et Al, shall take place at Grosvenor House on Friday 20th September.
SMC Design has been recognised by industry professionals for the work on Spirit of Discovery by winning the inaugural ‘Marine Interior Design of the Year’ award at the 2019 Seatrade Cruise Awards, hosted by CLIA in Hamburg.
Attending the awards on behalf of SMC Design was Senior Designer/Project Manager over it’s four year design period, Ben Wilson, who in reflection stated that, “this is a fantastic award to receive in recognition of the great work the design team at SMC produced, from the conceptual phases right up to the delivery of the ship”.
SMC Design were responsible for a wide variety of disciplines on this project, from the interior concepts of all public and crew areas, all cabins and suites, the signage and way-finding solutions onboard, the exterior styling of the vessel, and finally the Artwork procurement and commissioning by SMC Art Consultancy on behalf of SAGA Cruises.
SMC would like to thank SAGA Cruises and Meyer Werft shipyard for the fantastic collaboration experienced throughout this project, and wish all the best for Spirit of Discovery and it’s crew on the waves!
